The present owners have consulted the genius of their sloping 1.5 acre site with intelligence and imagination. On the bank above the broad terrace two borders have been contoured so that the colour and texture of imaginatively chosen flowers and foliage may be enjoyed at close quarters, one is planted in a predominantly wine and red colour theme, the other in soft blues, creams and yellows. The main herbaceous border and the bank border opposite, which incorporates a bog garden, forms the backbone of the garden. Lawns planted with unusual trees link the various areas and lead the eye upwards to the highest level, where there is an orchard, a sundial garden, a border with grasses and a hexagonal arbour supporting vines.
Beyond is a 1 acre wild flower meadow with a charming ‘borrowed tower’ terminating the view. The most atmospheric part of the garden is the sunken rose garden, a fabulous sight in June and gloriously scented by many old varieties of shrub roses underplanted with herbaceous perennials; an arbour and moon gate are festooned with clematis and rambling roses. From there a path leads down under trees to a streamside walk.
